The Kesbewa Constituency in the Colombo District stands out as a unique region, rich in both natural beauty and economic contribution. Home to over 270,000 people and more than 50,000 families, Kesbewa is a key player in Colombo’s economy, with its vibrant industries, businesses, and agriculture. The region has a long history of producing notable political figures, and in the upcoming 2024 general election, Ajith Naragala is poised to bring a new vision for its continued development.

A Thriving Economic Hub

Kesbewa is not just known for its scenic landscapes but also for its bustling industries. Numerous large businesses, companies, and self-employed individuals contribute significantly to the local and national economy. Many residents rely on these industries for their livelihood, and from these main economic drivers, various side businesses have also flourished.

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of the Kesbewa economy. From paddy farming to the production of fresh vegetables like keera, Kesbewa farmers supply Colombo and other regions with vital agricultural products. The constituency’s agricultural roots run deep, and Naragala’s vision seeks to honor and enhance this sector while embracing modernization.

A History of Political Leadership

Kesbewa has given rise to several prominent figures in Sri Lankan politics, including Somaweera Chandrasiri, Dharmasena Atigala, Dixon J. Perera, and Sirinal de Mel. More recently, under the leadership of Minister Gamini Lokuge, Kesbewa has experienced a period of rapid development. Minister Lokuge’s tenure saw the expansion of the area’s infrastructure, including the completion of 90% of the highway system, full electricity coverage, and the resolution of the region’s drinking water problems.

Schools in the constituency also benefited from this leadership, with improvements to infrastructure, such as the construction of stadiums, laboratories, and playgrounds, as well as the expansion of Piliyandala Madhya Maha Vidyalaya from 600 students to 2,000.

Challenges Ahead: Education and Urban Development

Despite these advancements, there are challenges that remain. The quality of education, particularly in secondary and high schools, is a pressing issue. Kesbewa’s schools, despite having excellent infrastructure, have struggled with poor academic results compared to Colombo’s popular schools. Raising the standard of education and improving examination results are key priorities in Naragala’s vision for the future.

Ajith Naragala’s plan also calls for further development of infrastructure to enhance the quality of life for Kesbewa’s residents. By adopting advanced urban development projects and modern urban concepts, Kesbewa can transform into a model town for the entire Colombo District.

Healthcare and Tourism Development

While the local healthcare system has seen some improvements, more work needs to be done. Naragala envisions turning hospitals and regional healthcare centers into more efficient, people-friendly institutions that cater to the growing needs of the population.

The Kesbewa Constituency is home to several notable tourist attractions and cultural landmarks, including the Bolgoda Tourist Zone, Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara, and Papiliana Sunetradevi Maha Pirivena. Despite their cultural and historical significance, these sites have not been fully utilized for tourism, limiting their potential economic benefits for the local community. Ajith Naragala aims to implement a comprehensive program to boost tourism in these areas, creating job opportunities and stimulating the local economy.

Empowering the Youth and Preparing for a Technological Future

One of Naragala’s central goals is to prepare Kesbewa’s youth for the future. He emphasizes the importance of equipping young people with the technical skills and analytical abilities necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing technological landscape. By fostering entrepreneurship and providing support for youth-led businesses, Naragala aims to create a prosperous future for Kesbewa’s younger generation.

A Strategic Plan for Kesbewa’s Future

Ajith Naragala’s vision for Kesbewa is clear: to continue the development initiated by previous leaders while introducing modern urban concepts, improving education, healthcare, and tourism, and empowering the youth. His strategic plan for building the towns of Kesbewa and Boralasgamuwa will not only uplift the local community but also make these areas key players in Colombo District’s overall growth.

As the 2024 general election approaches, Naragala calls on the people of Kesbewa to support this vision for progress and development. He urges voters to place their trust in the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and mark their preference for him, promising to lead Kesbewa into a new era of prosperity and opportunity.
